Anger, Aggression and Violence are common issues within Western society and as the demands of modern living increase so do many of the underlying causes: Stress, Frustration, Resentment, Anxiety, Low self esteem, Insecurity and loss of significance, worth or role. Society’s general attitude towards the issue is also confused and only serves to compound the problems. While naturally, society is seen to condemn violent behaviour; angry and aggressive behaviour is often applauded for some in the public eye while deplored for the rest of society. Also, ‘knee jerk’ reactive punishment, blaming and shaming of the individual, fails to offer the help and understanding need to overcome issues and reduce proliferation and also discourages individuals from seeking such help. Shame, guilt and fear of reprisals or retaliation often forces individuals to deny and suppress normal and natural feelings of frustration, resentment, anxiety, anger and aggression thus substituting passive-aggression or episodic outbursts for healthy expression and dialogue. This can often be seen in children, who are taught that all forms of angry, aggressive and violent behaviour are ‘bad’ and are to be avoided. We fail to teach our children how to express their feelings appropriately; that Anger and Aggression are normal and natural responses; how and when to be angry or what is an appropriate response. They are untrained and inexperienced is dealing with their feelings and their need to express their feelings and frustration are denied or suppressed. It is therefore to be expected that this carries on into adult life.
While many will deny it, most people suffer from frustration and resentment and have angry or aggressive thoughts or behaviours and do not know what to do to resolve their issues. Fortunately, help is at hand and more and more people are seeking help with their issues through ‘Anger Management’.
Anger and aggression issues are a serious problem that can ruin lives and therefore there is a need to prioritise and dedicate time, effort and money to resolving such issues before they overwhelm and irreparably damage your life. Anger Management treatments and classes are a cost effective Therapeutic solution to achieving sustainable and long term changes to how you live your life and relate to others. When weighed against loosing ones job, a criminal record for assault or worse, or the failure of a relationship or divorce and perhaps loosing access to one's children, the cost of such therapy is a small price to pay for a healthier, happier and more prosperous future. Why not contact us to see how we can help you?

While Anger Management continues to be the common term used to describe interventions designed to help others deal with their Anger and Aggression, it has been replaced and superseded by ‘Anger Therapy’. It has long been recognised that old style Anger Management was insufficient in achieving long term sustainable results. While in the short term, Anger Management achieved reasonable results, it is generally focussed upon symptoms and failed to resolve underlying causation. And thus, in the long term, symptoms return and sometimes with renewed vigour and destructive force. Also, Anger Management training offers ‘tools’ to help individuals cope with their issues. However, it is now known that many of the tools offered create more problems than they resolve. The use of ‘tools’ to overcome or mask symptoms inevitably cannot offer longevity or sustainability and the failure of many tools results in the worsening of problems and engenders feelings of failure, deficiency, hopelessness and self-deprecation, (punishing oneself and thinking ill of oneself), which further adds to one’s issues.
For example; tools like Displacement, Distraction and ‘walking away’ were and still seem to be, heavily promoted, however, they are known to either not work or be so impractical in application that they do more damage that good.
“Displacement Therapy” is based on a popular misconception amongst ‘lay people’ and some therapists and trainers which encourages the use of objects as ‘punch-bags’ for the expression of anger and aggression. It was though that to encourage the ‘healthy’ expression of built up frustration and aggression would alleviate the pressure on the individual and allow them to maintain a calmer and better adjusted state. However, this type of ‘therapy’ is has long been discredited as it fails to address the underlying causation and in fact ‘normalises’ violence. Expressing anger and aggression towards ‘punch-bags’, while ‘imagining’ striking a person or thinking about a person, is, to the mind, is no different from striking that person for ‘real’. The mind does not differentiate between what is ‘real’ and what is imagined. This type of activity overcomes an individual’s inhibitions concerning harming others and it becomes easier to do so each time one engages in it. And thus in situations where there are no punch bags and the individual feels the need, they will lash out.
Other ‘tools’ which encourage the individual to attempt to ‘Distract’ themselves from their Aggressive thoughts or ‘Walk Away’ from a volatile situation are quite simply ridiculous, impractical, cannot be relied upon and promote feelings of failure and helplessness. Avoiding an issue only pushed the issue outside of the individual’s sphere of influence and thus allows it to work unhindered. Not only that, have you ever tried to not think about something or replace it with something else while you are in the middle of it? It is a ridiculous notion. And as for “walking away”, our issues are based on our perceptions which we carry within our minds; one cannot walk away from one’s mind. Alternatively, if it is a volatile situation involving others, more often than not the others involved will either prevent the individual from escaping or pursue them. Also, turning your back on others and walking away is risky and denies the others a right to speak and thus is ‘passive-Aggressive’ in itself and may result in more violence.
Also, as is often the case, Anger Management’ trainers are not fully qualified and indemnified Counsellors or Psychotherapists. They are often individuals who see ‘Anger Management’ as a lucrative opportunity to make money and attend minimum training in order to enable them to facilitate their ‘client work’. However, they are ill qualified and untrained in dealing with the very real and often complex personal issues that lie at the centre of their client’s problems. What they actually offer to clients is a ‘sticking plaster’ in the form of a cognitive or behavioural ‘fix’ that has no depth or longevity in its application which becomes ‘unstuck’ under the pressure and strain of deeper issues.
In light or the above, and the moral and ethical need to offer clients help and support that provides for realistic long term sustainable results; regardless of their popularity and the obvious easy financial gains that such formulaic training offer, the therapists at TonicTalk do not offer nor engage in such bogus practices. Nor do we teach people not to be angry, or do we have any interest in judging an individual and their behaviour as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Anything that advocates avoiding one’s anger or judging it is counterproductive and encourages denial and psychological defences and repression.
Anger is a normal necessary psychological and physiological response to certain psychological processes and therefore we encourage a healthy, open and honest dialogue in which the individual can speak freely and openly without fear of rejection, judgement or retaliation. We facilitate a true exploration and resolution of the causation behind Anger and Aggression. We help, support and encourage individuals to discover why they are angry, how to engage with and process their issues and how to change their way of being. Our approach is proven and fully supported and while we may see fit to offer some appropriate and effective short term psychotherapeutic interventions, they are purely offered so as to help facilitate a longer term resolution.
Anger Management is somewhat of a misnomer for what we offer as our Anger Management is more properly called Anger Therapy and is offered to you and practiced by fully trained Psychotherapists and Counsellors who have completed years of training and personal development. Anger Therapy is an in depth intervention based on proven Psychotherapeutic Techniques that offer long term sustainable results. As a Psychotherapeutic and Counselling practice TonicTalk is also able to offer help to both those that have suffered at the hands of Aggressive, Angry, Bullying or Violent individuals as well as those who wish to overcome their own Angry, Aggressive or Violent behaviour.

Some Counsellors and Psychotherapists are well trained, skilful, dedicated and diligent professionals who take great care to provide high quality Counselling, Psychotherapy and other Psychotherapeutic services, while many others do not.

“An analyst can help his patient just so far as he himself has gone and not a step farther. …. with patients who got ‘stuck’ with their previous analysts and this always happened at the point where the analyst could make no further progress with himself.”
‘The Realities of Practical Psychotherapy’, paragraph 545. 1937
Carl G Jung (founder of analytical psychology).
A commitment to significant and ongoing Personal Development ensures that a Therapist is psychologically fit and healthy and in the best possible position to provide for their client’s needs and without it, a therapist is destined to relive their own issues with their client’s sessions and become ‘stuck’. We therefore insist that all our therapists are deeply committed to a high level of Personal Development to ensure that they are fit and capable of providing the highest levels of services and care to our clients.

Anxiety is a common to complex emotional, psychological and behavioural issue that can include the extremes of Panic Attacks, Phobias, OCD and GAD. Despite being ineffectual and having side-effects, G.P.s offer Anti-Anxiety medication which can only manage symptoms and will not resolve the underlying causes. Counselling and Psychotherapy offers one of the few viable long term sustainable solutions and our counsellors and Psychotherapists have great success in assisting individuals to overcome Anxiety, Panic Attacks, OCD and GAD.
There are many forms of depression, both long-term and short-term, and often these are treated with long term antidepressants which only manage symptomology without the prospect of a real sustainable solution. Talking therapies like Counselling and Psychotherapy can bring long term sustainable relief and we have an excellent reputation for providing such help.
We are a privately funded Psychotherapy and Counselling practice and therefore work directly for our clients and in their best interest. Client confidentially is assured through the following procedures:
- Since computers are vulnerable to attack and data theft; no personal client information or Counselling / Psychotherapy session notes are kept on computer.
- Client session notes and personal information are only kept as hard copy and securely locked away. Access to these paper records is restricted to the Therapist and Client unless directed by a court order or under other legal obligation.
- To ensure privacy and confidentiality, TonicTalk and its agents will not share any information concerning Counselling, Psychotherapy or other services accessed by a clients with any other agency unless specifically directed to do so by court order.
- The health services keep complete and lifelong medical records of all medical interventions including those reported by other agencies. Many, both within and without the health services have access to medical records and as such they should not be considered confidential. Often, insurers and employers demand access to medical records such that their content may prejudice both the availability and cost of insurance or be detrimental to employment prospects. In our opinion, it is therefore, not in the best interest of clients to inform G.P.s of services accessed.
For many people making the decision to take up Counselling or Psychotherapy is difficult. They often feel that their issues and concerns are not important enough to warrant attention for fear of being seen as a ‘malingerer’, ‘time waster’ or fraud when there are people who ‘really’ need help out there. Others feel that their issues and concerns are so insurmountable and overwhelming that they are impossible to resolve. And if they expressed how they feel; that they would lose themselves or never stop crying; or that a Therapist would not be able to ‘cope’ or be unwilling to help. Others feel that no one could begin to understand how they feel or be able to help, so what is the point trying to explain it? And others feel that their ’secret’ is so terrible or damning that they would be judged and rejected if anyone knew.
Small or large; any issue or concern that is having a detrimental effect on your life or the life of your family or your personal wellbeing is worth investing in to resolve. Anything that ‘pulls you down’, depresses you, causes you stress, anxiety or fear or to devalue yourself is something Therapy can help you to overcome.
Counselling and Psychotherapy, when practiced by a properly trained, qualified and developed Therapist, offers a unique opportunity to engage with how you feel and think and with your past and present experiences, within a safe, supportive, non-judging, nurturing and healthy environment. It is a positive opportunity to work perhaps on the most difficult elements of your life and in so doing grow beyond them and be renewed.
Everything that you currently Feel, Think and have Experienced is completely ‘real’ and undeniable; but, while it may do, it does not have to be the limit of your life and potential happiness. You can grow beyond Fear, Shame, Depression, Anxiety, Despair, Loneliness, Unhappiness, Worthlessness, Aggression and anything else that plagues your life and robs you of your Dignity, Value, Resilience, Spontaneity, Confidence, Tolerance, Appreciation, Peace and Joy. Life has infinite possibilities and in general, is what we make it. Through Therapy you can realise your potential and become all that you able to be.
While many may feel that Therapy is for weak, and perhaps ‘mental’ or ‘crazy’ people; it is not. Therapy is for everyone and anyone who wants to move beyond their issues, worries and concerns or overcome personal psychological problems that degrade their lives. Through the assistance Therapy offers, you can achieve joy, and a better connection and understanding with yourself and those in your life; you can become more tolerant and peaceful; and you can achieve a sense of self appreciation that will reflect in everything you do. Happiness is achieved when what you think, feel and do are in harmony with each other and your social and personal context; and Therapy can help you achieve this.
There is no need to ‘suffer in silence’ or ‘put up with’ things as they are. We are here to help you.
All our Therapists are experienced, skilled, qualified, reputable and professional practitioners who are able to provide help and therapy in the vast majority of cases. They are ordinary people who have worked and studied hard for years to acquire skills, insights, and personal qualities and achieve personal development that enables them to work effectively with clients.
Ordinarily, for the majority of people before they engage the services of a therapist they have many questions pertaining to types of therapies, diagnosis’, costs, time scales, expectations, and much, much more besides. In this section we hope to ask those questions and answer them as clearly and succinctly as possible. If however, you have a question that is not answered, please feel free to ‘contact us’ and we will endeavour to answer the question, find you an answer or point you in the right direction.
Here you will find Ideas, and Experience concerning how best to utilise your resources, Financial and Personal, to gain maximum benefit with respect to your personal development. We hope to promote that which we feel is helpful, explode some myths and expose the pitfalls so that you can at least recognise them. The section is divided up into four pages:
- Personal and Professional Issues
- Personal Therapy
- Group Work
- Independent Growth
In this section we have placed all that we would like to include on this site that did not fit under any of the previous headings:
This article has been randomly selected from a group of Counselling and Psychotherapy articles which attempt to provide information concerning the Therapeutic process and how it can help with respect to specific issues and concerns. The list is not exhaustive and we will continue to add to it when the opportunity arises.
Domestic violence is largely a hidden crime masked in shame, blame, and fear. It is mostly perpetrated against women and children by men however men can are also the victims. This type of abuse can take many forms including:
- Violent Attacks
- Sexual Abuse and Rape
- Restraining and Imprisoning
- Destruction of Property
- Fear and Intimidation
- Unreasonable and overbearing Control
- Emotional abuse
The statistics concerning Domestic violence perpetrated by current or ex partners are unreliable since as a crime it largely goes unreported and only is recorded when police or other agents of the law are involved. If you are in or have been in an abusive relationship Therapy can help you. If you are the perpetrator of abuse Therapy can also help you. Therapy is a safe non judging relationship in which anyone can work to improve their relationship with themselves, others and the world.
Counselling and Psychotherapy can help
- Increase self esteem, courage and motivation to change the nature of their relationships or end an abusive relationship.
- Understand why perhaps there may has been a string of abusive relationships and change the nature of relating to self which may allow or encourage such relationships to form
- Undo the emotional damage done by abuse or at lease help come to terms with it
- Raise self-empowerment, self-respect, self-belief, self-reliance, courage, resilience, and self-love.
- Overcome the need to use oppression, abuse and violence as a means of getting needs met
- Understand what is being expressed through abuse
- Improve self-respect
- Find healthy outlets for stress, frustration and resentment
- Improve relational and communication skills
- Break the cycle of abuse by helping children understand the true nature of health relationships for themselves and others
- Provide a safe place to express their emotions, fears, concerns and needs.
- Improve self esteem and self awareness
- Provide health and timely outlets for stress and frustration
- Improve relational and communication skills
Therapy has much to offer with respect to all forms of relational difficulties and there is no need to suffer in silence or live in fear. Please feel free to Contact Us to confidentially discuss your needs.
